Our Story

Whitney Marsh
In December 2017, Whitney’s stomach pain became unbearable, and our family feared the worst. After being misdiagnosed, Whitney finally received the devastating news in January 2018: she had pancreatic cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Whitney refused to let cancer define her. While undergoing chemotherapy and treatment at MD Anderson and in Arkansas, she continued to run 10 miles a day. Madison, her daughter, still jokes about the time they were at MD Anderson when Whitney complained about her pace slowing down. Even while fighting cancer, Madison couldn’t outrun her.
In July 2018, Whitney was selected for the Whipple procedure at MD Anderson. However, the day before surgery, her scans revealed that her cancer had rapidly progressed from stage I to stage IV. Whitney passed away just a few months later, in November 2018, at the age of 41.
Whitney’s story is a stark reminder that pancreatic cancer doesn’t discriminate—it affects even the healthiest athletes. Currently, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., with over 80% of patients diagnosed too late for effective treatment. At the Whitney Marsh Foundation, we are committed to changing this reality, ensuring that no patient is left behind.
Her kindness and service touched many in our Arkansas community, which led us to continue her legacy. Even throughout chemotherapy and battling pancreatic cancer, Whitney still found herself running 10 miles daily. The Whitney Marsh Foundation (WMF) was started from Whitney’s determination to not let the illness define her. Annually, we run together as a community to raise funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer to honor Whitney’s life and passion for running

The Family
Whitney’s legacy lives on through her beloved family, who continue to honor her memory with love, dedication, and a shared commitment to making a difference. Her husband, Mike Marsh, is a devoted local physician who not only cares for his community but also cherishes the simple joys of life. Whether he’s biking through scenic routes, much like he did with Whitney, or lovingly tolerating their mischievous dog Joey (who has a knack for sneaking food off the counter and clothes from the laundry room), Mike embodies the same warmth and resilience that Whitney brought to their family. Professionally, Dr. Marsh plays a pivotal role in ensuring event safety, race certification, and official USA Track and Field timing, reflecting his meticulous care and passion for excellence—a trait he shared with Whitney.
Whitney’s two daughters, Madison and Heidi, are a testament to her enduring spirit and values. Madison, who serves proudly in the Air Force, carries her mother’s adventurous and determined nature. In her free time, she soars through the skies as a pilot, whips up decadent desserts reminiscent of her mom’s culinary talents, and competes in pageants with grace and confidence. As the co-Founder and President of the Whitney Marsh Foundation (WMF), Madison channels her strength and leadership into the organization’s mission, ensuring her mother’s vision thrives.
Heidi, a bright and ambitious student at Southern Methodist University, embodies Whitney’s zest for life and love of community. She is deeply involved in student government, embraces the thrill of traveling abroad, and enjoys exploring the latest culinary hotspots. As the co-Founder and Vice President of WMF, Heidi brings her energy and creativity to the foundation, helping to drive its initiatives forward with passion and purpose.
Whitney’s three sisters—Stefanie, Melanie, and Kimberly—are pillars of love and support, dedicating their time and talents to the Whitney Marsh Foundation year-round. Their unwavering commitment to the cause reflects the deep bond they shared with Whitney and their shared determination to carry on her work.
Whitney’s stepchildren, Nick, Chris, and Sarah Marsh, have also played an integral role in the foundation, contributing their time and efforts to its programs. Their involvement underscores the unity and strength of Whitney’s extended family, who have come together to honor her memory and continue her mission.
Family was the cornerstone of Whitney’s life, and the Whitney Marsh Foundation is a reflection of her belief in the power of community and compassion. By focusing on supporting Arkansan families affected by pancreatic cancer, the foundation strives to ensure that no family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to this devastating disease. Every patient saved is a victory—a step toward a future where families are spared the heartache of loss, and Whitney’s legacy of love and hope shines brighter than ever.
